Not really..: The tempuro-mandibular joint , or TMJ , is a very complex joint with multiple direction motion capabilities. There is a movable disc / cartilage inside it which makes the movements more lubricated ; easier. Due to various conditions, sometimes this disc moves inaccurately (derangements) ; course that noise, and sometimes even painful. See your dentist first. He/she may even need to refer you.

TMJ Dysfunction: Did you suffer an injury to your jaw (ie. Whiplash) or have wisdom teeth removed recently? The popping sound is due to a disk of cartilage in your jaw joint (TMJ) becoming looser than it should be, and every time that your jaw opens or closes, the bone in the joint moves onto it and off it, creating the "pop". Contact your dds so that the joint can be examined and you can be properly treated.
