Jaw joint noise: As joints go, the TMJ and its disk are very mobile. Many patients disks are out of proper position from stretched attachments . What you feel is the jaw bone sliding over the displaced disk, with a "catch" often with a popping noise as you open. The management is usually conservative unless pain or decreased function or locking is severe in which cause joint lavage is a good option.

It is not normal: TMJ "closed lock." The TMJ disc remains trapped in front of the condyle resulting in limited condylar translation in the affected joint. The disorder is sometimes referred to as "closed lock." See an orofacial pain specialist for evaluation and preventive treatment.
