Flu is an infection: Flu is used very loosely for lots of viral infections. The "real" flue - influenza (for which there is the vaccine every year), is caused by 2 major families of viruses. It lasts several days with fever, aches and pains, sore throat with no pus or significant redness and a dry cough. Allergy is an immunologic hypersensitivity reaction to pollen, pets, mold, medications, venom, cosmetics, etc.
