Emergency: His worries me a lot. Edema in the lower extremities usually means a heart problem. Broken ribs with a complication causing heart failure makes me want to send you to the er urgently. If he is comfortable, and able to speak in full sentences you may want to page the family doctor first. But please, if he appears ill or in any kind of stress get to the er!
