A member asked:

Why would an endodontist send tissue sample to pathologist after a apicoectomy? what are they looking for?

Routine exam: It is routine to send tissues to be evaluated by the pathologist. The tissue is typically inflammation or a cyst and they just want to confirm this. Do not worry. It is very rare that it is something other than this.

Periapical tissue: This is routinely done to confirm that the tissue at the apex of the root on a failed root canal therapy is either a cyst or chronic inflammation. Most medical and dental insurance companies also require that pathology report with a diagnostic code in order to pay a claim for the procedure.
