Bunions can be...: Seen w/ the naked eye. X-rays can confirm a hallux valgus deformity( your big toe angles toward your second toe)associated w/ the protruding 'bump' or bunion. Consider seeing an experienced orthopedic surgeon or one w/ specialized foot and ankle training.A podiatrist can also treat bunions . Often shoe wear modifications, bunion 'pads' can be helpful. Why so painful?: Not to downplay your symptoms, i'm confused. If they are painful, how can they be numb?. When you say the doctor can't help, seek out a new doctor. Bunions usually create a bump pain, they run the counters of your shoes and create mechanical pressure pain. This may account why they hurt some days / not others (depends on the shoes you wear). Gout? Already take strong pain med.? No heat ever.
