Voiding at night: This depends. If its simply a matter of not waking up at night to go to the bathroom but can go when you wake up then its ok. But, if you feel the urge to go and cant, then you should seek help asap to rule out something more serious.

Urinary retention: This may be acute urinary retention which is the inability to empty the bladder. Urinary retention can be caused by an obstruction in the urinary tract or by nerve problems that interfere with signals between the brain and the bladder. Urinary tract infection, bladder stones can cause spasm or blockage of urine, which nerve conditions including medications can inhibit bladder contraction. See md.
