It depends: Neurofibromatosis 1 can be mild or severe. It does not by itself shorten life expectancy, though if a neurofibrosarcoma develops it is likely to be very serious.

Majority do: Most patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis have mild involvement and live relatively normal lives. Patients with severe involvement can have deformity of bones and large amount of overgrowth of tumors.If severe in infant or young child sometimes can be fatal.
