A member asked:

My dad has a 7mm nodule on his lung. will a pet w/ ct tell us if its cancer or is it still too small to be detected?

PET may help: Pet scan is likely to be helpful. The nodule may be an old scar and may not light up on pet. If it lights up on pet, additional investigation, including a biopsy may be needed.

PET not diagnostic: A 7mm nodule might light up on a pet scan if it has a very high sugar uptake, but that would not be diagnostic of cancer, it could be an infection. A positive pet scan means the nodule should be investigated. A negative pet scan would not mean anything because the nodule should be at least 10mm in to accurately call it pet negative. A follow up ct scan in 3 months could assess for growth.
