Cough medicine: It would help to know the age and weight of your child.Assuming he is older you can use mucinex (guaifenesin).

Not helpful: Generally, there is no great improvement to taking cough medicine. None of the over the counter cough medicines really have much effect. Fluid intake and rest are the best. Medication interactions are common.
