Age dependent: Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children. But as people get older they develop immunity to rotavirus and other bacterial and viral causes of gastroenteritis are more common.

Thanks for asking!: Most cases in children are caused by rotavirus, while in adults it is norovirus & campylobacter.
