Herpes labialis: Cold sore is self limited. However antiviral cream or ointment like abreva or Acyclovir will shorten duration.

Depends: Hsv1 is very common and the majority of the adult population have antibodies to the disease which commonly causes cold sores or apthous ulcers in the mouth. This is often self limiting, but antiviral meds may help shorten the course. If it is hsv2, that is genital herpes, which can be found in the oral cavity from oral sex with an infected person, and is treated as genital herpes with medications.
