You're confused: Neuronal receptors are proteins that float around in neurons' cell membranes. The nr1 subunit is a part of the nmda receptor. Nmda receptors make up only about 1% of cerebral neuronal receptors but they are widely distributed throughout the entire brain. They play a part in long-term potentiation, which is believed to be one of the mechanisms of learning and memory.
