Sometime: Bipolar disorder may be associated with higher levels of energy and creativity. But its only effective if the mood is stabilized properly. Otherwise the creative ideas my be fragmented in mania and harder to express in depression.

Great question: Yes: There is no doubt that the incidence of mood disorders is higher among certain classes of creative individuals, poets in particular. Yet the association to general intelligence is weak, and the presence of a mood disorder does not predict high iq. Kay redfield jamison is head of mood disorders at johns hopkins, bipolar herself, a brilliant writer and psychologist. See her "touched with fire".
