Broken hymen: A normal hymen is a circle of elastic tissue around the vagina opening, like a stretchy bracelet. If you've had menstrual periods, its very likely you have a normal hymen. Its a myth that the hymen always breaks with sex or tampons; the skin usually just stretches. An MD can examine you and tell you if you have significant tears in your hymen if you're really concerned.
