Helping an addict: It depends if he wants to stop or not. There's nothing you can do to make him stop and nothing you can do to make him use, although addicts will blame others for doing so. There may be a companion group for you, such as al-anon (for aa), naranon (for na), gamanon (for ga), cosa (for saa). Entering your own recovery helps you to not enable him, which helps him whether he wants to stop or not.
