See your eye doctor: Flashes of light for a few seconds can mean a couple things and should be urgently evaluated by an ophthalmologist. If in one eye this could be traction on the retina (the fluid within the eye can pull on the retina) which could result in a tear or detachment of the retina. This is more likely with age, trauma or recent surgery. If flashes are in both eyes this is likely an ocular migraine.

Exam: Flashes or photopsias should be evaluated by an eye md to review the back part of the eye (retina, blood vessels, and vitreous gel). Ordinarily people see floaters as they age. These are small grayish spots that don't obscure vision. Flashes may indicate the pulling of the vitreous off the retina, infrequently tearing the retina as a result. Flashes can also come from:migraine, pressure circulatio.
