Yes and no: Stones can be very intense and painful certainly causing abdominal and flank pain. This is due to a relatively small diameter ureter allow for passage of a several millimeter size stone. Why most people do not feel passage of the stone through the urethra is that there is a much larger diameter of the urethra compare to the ureter.

Yes: Passing stone may illicit vague pain and you may not know you passed it.
