Awhile: It may take a few months to resume normal cycle. You didn't mention how long it had been out for, but if it's less than 3 months or so, likely everything okay and just wait for cycle. If more than 3 months, consider seeing gynecologist to discuss other reasons for absence.

Lighter, and shorter: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud is fda approved as a treatment for heavy periods. It has progestin hormone on it, that causes the lining of the uterus to become thinner over time. Most women experience a lighter period with the Mirena (levonorgestrel) in place.
