A member asked:

Why is it that women bleed heavily after birth?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Placental or uterine: The 3 most common causes of most cases of postpartum hemorrhages are : a delay of the uterine muscles to contract appropriately (uterine atony) ; retention of placental fragments or to injuries to the birth canal during a vaginal delivery (cervical, vaginal or perineal lacerations). Other causes are much rarer.
