Primary difference: Put simply, depression is feeling chronically sad for most of at least 2 weeks. With bipolar disorders, mood swings from depression to mania. Mania includes feeling extremely energized, needing little or no sleep, feeling unreasonably happy, sometimes engaging in dangerous behaviors w/o considering or caring about consequences.
