Yes: There are several human herpes viruses. All cause initial infection, then lie dormant and may recur later. When dormant, some are not contagious, like varicella zoster virus (causes chickenpox and shingles) or Epstein Barr virus (mononucleosis). Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, which cause oral and genital herpes, often are contagious even when dormant, but only by close or intimate contact.
