A member asked:

Can someone tell me if memory repression is a real thing?

No clear answer: I know that I have sometimes put unpleasant things and mistakes out of my own mind rather than deal with them wisely. Most therapists today do not believe that most emotional and behavioral difficulties result from unrecalled victimization, but seek instead to relieve people's suffering and help them discover strengths ; gain skills and letting them understand their past as part of the process.

Memory repression: Is a classic defense mechanism that the brain uses. The issue that has garnered a great deal of attention - is when therapists attempt to retrieve repressed memories. People can be very suggestible - ; it is possible for a person to believe something occurred (which never happened) due to suggestion through the process. Clearly, that could cause more harm than good.
