Difficult to tell: Generally nerve pain is severe burning pain in the leg or area of the involved nerve, muscle pain is like a cramp or charlie horse but in reality it is often not possible to tell the difference by how you feel the pain. That is why you will need some further testing to find out the cause of pain. Like MRI or EMG and nerve conduction studies. Hope that helps.

Mixtures of the 2: Muscle pain (sharp, dull, achy) and nerve pain (burning, numbing, tingling) can be mixed into a combined syndrome effect. Please see a musculoskeletal (foot/ankle or orthipedic) specialist ;/or a neurologist (nerve specialist) asap.
