Goes away on own: If he fell asleep on his arm and has developed a radial nerve palsy ( "sat night palsy") this would cause weakness w/wrist/ hand.Pressure on the ulnar nerve( 'funny bone')from sleeping would cause numbness in the 4, 5th fingers and some hand weakness. Both will improve spontaneously.( usually w/in 1-2 hrs or quicker). If not, see md.... ? Hx.Of ex.Fix.To arm?

Radial nerve palsy: This sounds more like a radial nerve palsy to me rather than an ulnar nerve / radial nerve would cause a "drop hand " unable to extend the wrist the good news is that they usually go away but the bad news is that there is no guarantee and it can take quite awhile to get better/ it sounds as though he has a good bit of other problems which may have lead to this / difficult situation allround.
