More risk: The higher the average blood sugar (hba1c), the higher the risk for developing long term complications of diabetes, such as, eye, kidney, nerve disease, as well as higher risks for cardiovascular disease. One cannot assign a particular percentage risk, as there are many other factors that affect this, such as blood pressure, family history, cholesterol level, weight. The lower hba1c, the better.

High: Organ failure of eyes, kidney, nerves even risk of heart attack is something that occurs after years of uncontrolled blood sugar, not after one or 2 highs here and there but it is important to control bs because once organ failure occurs it is not reversible.
