Virus: More than likely this is a viral infection and if the sore throat worsens and there is no sign of a head cold, the next step would be to have a throat culture to check for a strep infection which would need antibiotic treatment. In the meantime try soothing measures like gargles and lozenges before seeing your physician. The appearance of laryngitis would also suggest a viral infection.
