'crick neck: The most common cause of what you're describing is 'crick neck'. The most common cause is sleeping in a position that causes a neck muscle spasm or a spam of several muscles due to abnormal tension on them. It should resolve that day or at most a day or two. If it last longer or gets worse, see your PCP.
