Gum boil: Generally the gum boils are treated by drainage of the pus, disinfecting and then filling the infected tooth. Apicectomy, which is the removal of the tip of the root, is done when disinfecting the tooth is not possible. Extracting the tooth is another option when the damage done by the bacterial infection is irreversible.

Root canal: Most likely the nerve of the tooth is infected, and the inside of the tooth needs to be cleaned out by having a root canal filling done. If the tooth has alreadly had a root canal, then either the site should be surgically debridor a new root canal should be done (apicoectomy).
