Possibilities: Could be that she is depressed or that she is experiencing dementia or both. Please have her evaluated by a neuropsychologist or geriatric psychologist/psychiatrist.

Aging? Lonely?: At her age it can be related to an early dementia stage which might make it harder to break through, but it may be something apart from brain function - needing to feel connected matters at any age. If you can gently introduce her to counseling - through a doctor she trusts or even clergy, what the problems and solutions are may become clearer. Drugs may be helpful, but 1st understanding is needed.
