Why are you nervous?: At your age why are you going to be tested for glaucoma? You just going to get a routine check and may be check of pressure in eye and eye fields test and fundal exam there is nothing to be nervous about.

Eye examination: The doctor will look into your eyes to check your optic pressure and alsocheck your eye pressure. It is usually brief but may be uncomfortable. He may also do a visual feild. Be rest assured it is not painful.

A puff of air: The current way to test for glaucoma is to do what is called 'air puff tonometry'. In this, a short puff of air is directed at the cornea and how much it indents is measured. This indicates what the pressure inside the eye is. It is not painful, but can be slightly startling.

Painless test: Glaucoma tests performed by the real eyedoctors, the ophthalmologists, involve using a device called a goldmann tonometer. The eye is numbed with a drop, the device is positioned over the eye and a direct readout of the pressure is possible. This is the 'gold standard' test. Air puff is used mostly by optometrists and is useful for screening but is less accurate.
