Yes: Both canker sores and aphthous ulcers are two names for the same lesions that develop on the soft tissues in your mouth. Unlike cold sores which are caused by the herpes virus, they do not occur on the outside surface of your lips and are not contagious although they are painful and take from 7 to 14 days to go away.
