A simple cyst is OK!: A simple (clear or see through) renal cyst is not a significant event. However, a complex cyst, (the one that appears to house tissue or clotted blood inside) is important to follow closely because it may be cancerous. However, if cysts are too numerous and on both sides, like in the case of polycystic kidney disease, the squished renal tissue over the years may lead to kidney failure.

Renal Cyst: Solitary kidney cysts are generally harmless. A radiologist and urologist can determine if a cyst is complex or irregular. These can harbor tumor. Multiple cysts indicate a genetic abnormality, such as polycystic kidney. Solitary cysts rarely bleed and rarely get infected and rarely rupture. Polycystic kidney cysts can bleed and can get infected easily. MRI can diagnose cyst nature.
