Driven: CO2 levels stimulate breathing to inhale O2. Hold your breath, and the co2 levels rise and your need to breath continues to increase until you breath or pass out and your body takes over and you breath. Unless you are breathing high levels of O2 (from an O2 source) your body will drive up the resp. rate to get it from the air.
