Most, not all: Many people with substance abuse issues have underlying psychiatric and emotional problems. In women, early life trauma (physical, emotional and sexual) is extremely common, and it is not uncommon in men as well. Many have personality disorders, particularly borderline, narcissistic and antisocial. Even those without such problems develop personality changes as result of addiction.
