In the first: Three months of pregnancy, the developing child (embryo -> fetus) is making its organs, muscles and nervous system, and any radiation exposure can cause birth defects. Those occur naturally as well, but the "lead shield" blanket was intended to reduce exposure, and risk to fetus.
