Cross eyed: This is an unusual set of symptoms description. It is possible that you are farsighted and "over accommodating" can produce this effect with eye fatigue. It would be best to see an ophthalmologist who can address this issue, particularly since you are in the presbyopic age where reading glasses or bifocals can be of great assistance.

Muscle spasm: A spasm of the 'near focus' muscles could explain this. This is known as accommodative spasm. If you are already noticing a decrease overall in your near vision, reading glasses may help this problem. This may be occurring because you are straining to much to see up close. It is always a good idea to have an eye doctor check it out for you.

Dry eyes?: Did your eyes actually cross ; did you see double vision? Pain in the eye is many times difficult to localize, and any one diagnosis can lead to many different pain descriptions. If no double vision, then dry eyes can easily cause intermittent blurred vision ; eye pain. You should see an eye md, but as a test, you could try otc preservative-free artificial tears every hour and see if it helps.

Spasm of near reflex: Your symptoms seem to be related to your age based straining to see up close. The resulting spasm in your convergence muscles( medial recti) result in a triad of crossing of eyes, accommodation, and miosis (constriction of pupils). This will result in blurring of your vision and achiness. A refraction for your vision to assess both near and far vision will provide you with the proper prescription.
