Immune deficiency: Any condition affecting the portion of the immune system mediated by helper lymphocytes may render susceptibility to pneumocystis. Patients with lymphomas, some leukemias, etc., are at risk when their diseases are out of control.

Several: In general this infection is associated with damage to the part of the immune system controlled by a kind of white blood cell, called a t lymphocyte. This can be seen with prolonged use of high dose steroids medicines, or in blood cancers like leukemia. Lymphoma, and after organ transplants because of the needed suppression of the immune system to prevent organ rejection.
