Yes: Sometimes with the NuvaRing there is just such a slight build up of the lining that the discharge is very little and the bleeding represents what looks like old blood and can be darker like you describe.

Effects of Nuva Ring: The nuval ring releases estrogen, and the side effects are the same as any woman taking extra Estrogens ie. The increased risk of increased blood clotting is the most serious, and can be seen in woman taking bcp. Other side effects can also be associated with extra estrogen such a spider veins, and slight defects of the liver's handing the excess estrogen.

No it is not bad: This is perfectly safe and can be used to diminish the number of periods that you have. There is the risk of spotting and breakthrough bleeding at times, but overall it is a safe option.

I don't C how?: There is a limit to how far up in the vagina and object can go. It the ring is at the farthest extent of the vagina, it has gone as far as it can go. If you have a concern, discuss with pcp/gyn or get examination. Contraception and total effectiveness is too important to ignore. The consequences are too great.
