On 13-1-2014 i.e 8 days back my thumb nail got injured by a hook while washing clothes. and on 15th the wound got swollen and painful.

See a doc: You are describing an infection of the nail called paronychia. It needs to be treated with an oral antibiotic before it turns into an abscess. Try soaking it in gold listerine and water for 10-12 minutes until you can get an appointment with your physician.

Unlikely: Usually it would take 2 to 3 days before you see significant signs resulting from an infected wound. Have it evaluated and appropriately treated.
