Not known: We know this so far, ms is an autoimmune disease associated with genetic susceptibility, and environmental triggers (including increased incidence with prior ebv infections, low levels of vitamin d, growing up north of latitude 39, smoking, eating high fat, high salt diet, etc). Not sure what you mean by mitochondria, but these cellular contents are damaged by ms lesions.
