Biliary emesis: Bile is typically a golden yellow color. It mixes with food to help digest dietary fats. When bile backs up into the stomach, it may appear in your vomitus. When persistent, it can lead to alkaline reflux and stomach irritation. Lots of common things can cause bilary emesis, but if persistent, worsening, or associated with pain, tenderness, weight loss, blood then please have it evaluated.

Can be serious: This is probably reflux unless you are actually having symptoms of bowel obstruction or stomach outlet obstruction, which will take you to the emergency room. A physician's office visit is in order.

Vomit bile: One form of reflux espophagitis involved retroperistalsis of bile from the duodenum and then reflux up from the stomach through an incompetant gastroesophageal valve.
A 46-year-old member asked:

I'm just wondering, if you throw up green liquid, is that bile?

Yes: Bile is the green substance secreted by the liver, stored in the gallbladder and released at the time of a fatty meal. If you vomit it up, it means that your GI tract was disrupted and instead of the bile going down, it decided to go up.

A 35-year-old female asked:

Currently taking kapidex but will sometimes throw up black/coffee ground bile. Is this an issue or just humor (melancholy) per the greeks?

See gastro: Coffee-ground emesis is not normal. Bile is green. Yes, you are on a medicine for ulcer, but sometimes there are failures. You still could have slow bleeding area, especially off and on. It is best to have it evaluated and maybe an upper endoscopy can look but depends on what your doctor feels.

A 45-year-old female asked:

If you are nervous can you throw up bile?

Dr. John Fung
General Surgery 39 years experience
Yes: Bile is normally excreted into the portion of the small intestine immediately beyond the end of the stomach. During retching, it is very possible for that bile to reflux into the stomach, leading to the yellowish/greenish color of the vomit. Usually this happens on an empty stomach, since food tends to neutralize the effect of bile irritation on the stomach. You might try taking some crackers
