Sometimes: Most optic nerve tumors are benign although they can grow and cause the nerve to fail. The two most common of these types are gliomas and meningiomas. Tumors can also be metastatic from other sites in the body. A few rare types like schwannoma also can do this any such tumor should be diagnosed and treated if possible.
