The muscular: dystrophies (MD) are a group of > 30 genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement. Onset of symptoms in some types of MD occurs in infancy/childhood; in other types, not till middle age or older. They also differ in the distribution & extent of muscle weakness, rate of progression & pattern of inheritance. See mda.org.for more.
