Spores: The bacteria can encase themselves in a very touch coat that makes them basically indestructable. They can stay in the soil for centuries.

Anthrax: Bacillus Anthracis spores (endospores) are dormant & can be found on in the soil of all the continents. The spores are hardy & can survive in many environments for centuries. When they are inhaled they reactivate & begin multiplying.
