Biopsy: Sometimes the appearance or clinical picture will be very convincing of malignancy but as a rule you need a biopsy of sorts. A pathologist will look at the specimen and do some additional test to it in order to confirm that is cancer and where it started from. In addition, molecular and gene studies are often done on the tissue to help guide therapy.
