Pain=a warning: signal the what you are doing is inducing more physical tissue stress (as judged by your mind/brain) than tissues are currently adapted to endure; the same issue when non-athletes drive themselves (if only briefly) to perform maneuvers/motions/activity which athletes have been practicing/developing for decades with careful progressive adaptation of their mind+brain+body to be able to perform.
