A member asked:

Can you tell me about drugs that breakdown thrombi (clots)?

Dr. Steve Howe answered

Specializes in Thoracic Surgery

Very Powerful: Unlike heparin and coumadin (warfarin) ,which prevent the GROWTH of clot, thrombolytics (or "clot-busters") actually attack the biochemical structure of clots and break them apart. These medications are only administered in a hospital and under the direct supervision of the prescribing doctor. They are powerful and can cause serious bleeding but used appropriately are life saving!
