See below: Lichen planus is a disease of the skin and/ormucous membranes that resembles lichen. It is thought to be the result of an autoimmune process with an unknown trigger. In the mouth it can cause redness and swelling, peeling of the gums and cheeks painful sores. Without treatment, most lesions will spontaneously resolve within 6–12 months.
