A member asked:

Just curious: how come you to take birth control for a while until it works, but if one misses 2 or 3 days of pills, then they could end up pregnant?

Compliance: When a woman takes the pill, the ovaries are suppressed and ovulation does not happen. Skipping pills allows the ovaries to resume function and with the resultant ovulation pregnancy can easily occur.

It's the timing: If you take the pill with the beginning of your period it will be immediately effective, and you stop the pill for a few days to bring a period so missing a few will not necessarily put you at risk for pregnancy. The general concept is that you need to take the pill consistently and regularly for it to be most effective.
